Who will care for your pets if you’re no longer here?
For many of us, pets are much more than animals – they are cherished members of the family. Yet when people sit down to make a Will, they often focus on their children, property, and finances, while overlooking an important question:
Who will care for my pets if I can no longer do so?
A recent news story highlighted the unfortunate reality that without clear instructions, beloved pets can be left in uncertain circumstances when their owners pass away. Family members may disagree about who should take responsibility, or there may be no clear plan at all.
Including your pets in your estate planning
While pets cannot inherit assets directly, your Will can include provisions that set out your wishes for their care.
These provisions might include:
- Naming the person or family you would like to care for your pet.
- Providing alternative caregivers if your first choice is unable or unwilling to act.
- Leaving funds to assist with your pet’s ongoing care and welfare.
- Recording specific instructions regarding feeding, medical treatment, exercise, grooming, or other special needs.
- Setting out preferences for the pet’s future living arrangements.
Every pet is different, and the arrangements should be tailored to suit both the pet and the owner’s wishes.
What if you already have a will?
If you already have a Will in place, there may be no need to prepare an entirely new document.
A Codicil can often be prepared to record your wishes regarding your pets. A Codicil is a legal document that amends or supplements an existing Will and is read together with the Will following your death.
This can be a practical and cost-effective way to ensure your pet care instructions are formally documented.

Pets rely entirely on their owners for their wellbeing. Taking the time to make arrangements now can provide peace of mind that they will continue to be cared for by someone you trust.
